Certified in Koh Samui, Thailand. The qualification that makes every dive after it possible — and the first time a checklist stopped feeling like paperwork.

Junior Rescue Diver

The course that changed how I think about risk. It is almost entirely about noticing a small problem early, because underwater a small problem does not stay small.
The Rescue course is the one that carried over. Noticing a small problem early is a better description of financial risk than most of the definitions I had read.
A certificate is only evidence that something was finished. The finishing is the part that counts.
